Menorca is actually the most easterly point of Spain, covering an area of approximately 700 km2. with a length of 53 Km. and an average width of 15’51 Km. The island has a local population of 80.000. Yes, it is without doubt a small island, but this is part of its enchanted aura, an island with an incredible history, populated by affable and honest locals who relish a privileged lifestyle, cantered around a healthy economy, a strong family conviction and a respect for the islands natural canvas.
Although tourism is perhaps the most important industry on the island, it has not dominated its landscape and has developed in harmony with the islands strong conservation philosophy.
Menorca Island is divided into eight counties, each with a town.
These eight towns are:

Mahón (Maó):Maó became the administrative Capital of the island when the maritime and military influence on the Port of Maó became dominant. This grand harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world, and a boat trip is highly recommended to appreciate its size. Walking around Maó itself, it’s quite visible to view the buildings and churches left by previous dominations. These military occupations also left their mark in local government , laws and some industries too, one of the liquid pleasures left from the British occupation was the gin factory “Gin Xoriguer” located on the port side and open for tasting´s. |
Ciutadella:The palatial old capital located on the west coast, easily more elegant than Maó. Within its cobbled streets ad wide avenues are romantic private gardens and palaces that hint of a grand past. Ciutadella with its superb Cathedral is the home of the islands Bishop, and remains therefore the religious centre of the island. |
Alaior:This industrial town is dominated by the production of cheese, pastries, cakes and leather shoes. Most of these factories have shops open to the public. The town also boasts a university faculty which is part of the University of the Balearic Islands. |
