Getting on and off the island

If you fancy a day trip or break, catch the terry to Mallorca, ferries leave daily from Ciutadella and Maó to Alcudia, Palma or Cala Ratjada. Journey time takes between one – three hours, depending on the ferry.

There are also ferries operating from Mahon and Ciutadella to Barcelona and from Maó to Valencia. The journey time anything from 3 hours to 9 hour’s depending on the ferry.

Flying regularly into Menorca from Palma, Madrid or Barcelona are the airlines, Iberia, Clickair, Spanair and Air Europa. The English airline flymonarch.com also has a direct link from England (Maó - Palma is a 20 minute journey, and Maó - Barcelona is 40 minutes).

Throughout the summer there are more charter airlines operating from various European airports.

Travelling around the island

The “M1” of Menorca is the general spinal road which runs through the centre of the island linking Maó to Ciudadella and connecting with the major towns of Alaior, Es Mercadal and Ferreries. Radiating from the M1 are the roads to the coastal resorts, Fornells and Es Migjorn.

Between Maó and the east coast, there is a triangular road which links Maó with Es Castell and Sant LLuis. Maó to Fornells is a separate road which links with the northern resorts of Addaia, Arenal den Castell and Son Parc not forgetting the coastal village of Es Grau and the picturesque lighthouse of Favoritx.

The island also has an abundance of rural roads, one of the most beautiful being the Cami den Kane, but there are many roads which weave around the island offering exciting bicycle routes.

To really discover the islands secrets we recommend that you hire a vehicle (www.villacars.es).

The public bus (www.tmsa.es), is fine for reaching the main towns, but there routes and timetables fail to please the more adventurous.

Taxis, although generally friendly, clean and efficient, they can be expensive.
